On Monday morning, as breaking news was still coming out I dropped my son off at school and went running. I plugged in my loud music and ran further than I have in a while. I have legs, I have a life, I can run. 49 innocent people will never run again, maybe more. When I got home I watched the news footage and started pulling fabric out. Before long I had made this mini quilt.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnO9SwyN45gRh5DaNkThqi6SBLrSJTOmd2KZub6_erm7ixiax0q5oVwfTGmXo2Dj9dxXYDberFTyGy9gWW5ZjpP5oGrcgS3Y-TRdLoelm_HWn10q6MvdvQk66FdICGe4CuOI0dWp8_yCU/s640/blogger-image--1511836497.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnO9SwyN45gRh5DaNkThqi6SBLrSJTOmd2KZub6_erm7ixiax0q5oVwfTGmXo2Dj9dxXYDberFTyGy9gWW5ZjpP5oGrcgS3Y-TRdLoelm_HWn10q6MvdvQk66FdICGe4CuOI0dWp8_yCU/s640/blogger-image--1511836497.jpg"></a></div> That cotton and steel fabric came in really handy with Florida on it. The same thought occurred to me, I can create, I can make something beautiful, so I should. So many creative souls were lost on Monday, let us make the art they won't make now. This flag is a reminder for me to stand against hate and stand with my lgbtq loved ones in solidarity. </div><div><br></div><div>But what more could I do? Thankfully the Orlando modern quilt guild has done what quilters do in tough times - planned a quilt of comfort, dozens and dozens of them. So I'm making blocks to go to Florida like this: </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVKBpcwNjsZMbZ5LWDkOty0eQlPMaRMti7_Vf0RqK9gqzGRlGWHBkj_fZIwnL0x2KV8-I7YtLzyndliQZFK9Q7ZaMu3QzdmaY2FmoDf6xK0VDJzVnZSHOZkZv2xTOqh8E1zZWKkUiiWcQ/s640/blogger-image-160632665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVKBpcwNjsZMbZ5LWDkOty0eQlPMaRMti7_Vf0RqK9gqzGRlGWHBkj_fZIwnL0x2KV8-I7YtLzyndliQZFK9Q7ZaMu3QzdmaY2FmoDf6xK0VDJzVnZSHOZkZv2xTOqh8E1zZWKkUiiWcQ/s640/blogger-image-160632665.jpg"></a></div>And since I'm only one person I have invited other uk quilters to join me - I'll be the post lady and get it all to Orlando. </div><div><br></div><div>These quilts won't bring the victims back, but if they show love and bring some comfort that is the best we can hope for.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4360861986756769185.post-63631436736952543692016-04-14T12:39:00.001-07:002016-04-15T22:55:34.393-07:00It Will Be FineA dear friend had something really rubbish happen to her. The kind of Pull the rug out from under her feet, life changing rubbish that no one deserves, least of all my kind lovely friend. So of course I wanted to make her a quilt. Love it! The instantness of it all, millions of photos of lovely quilts and fabric and sewing machines and cats of top of all of the above - and you can show your appreciation with a tap of a screen. A sewing frenzy, if you will.<br>
<br>

<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
I haven't found anything like it out there on t'internet, so I thought I'd make a tutorial!<br>
<br>
You will need: <br>
5 2x4" scraps for the tags<br>
4 1x5" pieces for the in between strips<br>
2 2x5" pieces for the start and finish strips<br>
<br>
1 5 x5" square for the back<br>
<br>
heavy filling - rice, couscous etc.<br>
<br>
1. Fold the 5 tag scraps in half lengthwise, right side together. Sew across the short ends.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjth-ld1CQHEiND1ioDbRlU1kLRWvD4SC7AMyX-vFnVRxtcm8OHwOnyKUVWtt88edm4PjihkFDYPD1eCr27cLqWhePgj4qY2Bve1QEtw9n0hcL67gGqeJEKt-OwBIw_58RuteAHq8byIEc/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjth-ld1CQHEiND1ioDbRlU1kLRWvD4SC7AMyX-vFnVRxtcm8OHwOnyKUVWtt88edm4PjihkFDYPD1eCr27cLqWhePgj4qY2Bve1QEtw9n0hcL67gGqeJEKt-OwBIw_58RuteAHq8byIEc/s640/photo+4.JPG" width="640"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Turn the tags right side out and press.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Take the start piece and lay a tag, centred, along the bottom edge, lay an inbetween strip over that, matching up the ends, pin and sew along the bottom edge, 1/4 inch seam of course!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1lZ819k44sU2z1I2PpXNMO99_17cFE7q9EYRRsewZnqMUMEVgTsZNCkgFTpIF3jYmMb6eoy4p-S2asCS_m-3dYovFTBcjZQRBKMHI_WF0od6OFbZYWzRPNUQ2bUoQJhf47zaNnJq7Dck/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1lZ819k44sU2z1I2PpXNMO99_17cFE7q9EYRRsewZnqMUMEVgTsZNCkgFTpIF3jYmMb6eoy4p-S2asCS_m-3dYovFTBcjZQRBKMHI_WF0od6OFbZYWzRPNUQ2bUoQJhf47zaNnJq7Dck/s640/photo+5.JPG" width="640"></a></div>
<br>
4, Finger press the inbetween strip down, so you can see that the first tag has been neatly stitched inbetween the first and second strip.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ltq6Bid4KuHGsR7L6hRjmXvpp1g6SMRnK_dO0iIfP8foZipm1WwNS6X_Kcsn0GY_Dbi5r-9e9s0yWkT0n7LRjg9ZSEa3nZo5lbRTbQwSSc0Z4tu2T_wYGhe8xM0LYQ9RpPK7APOJADA/s1600/photo+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ltq6Bid4KuHGsR7L6hRjmXvpp1g6SMRnK_dO0iIfP8foZipm1WwNS6X_Kcsn0GY_Dbi5r-9e9s0yWkT0n7LRjg9ZSEa3nZo5lbRTbQwSSc0Z4tu2T_wYGhe8xM0LYQ9RpPK7APOJADA/s640/photo+7.JPG" width="640"></a></div>
<br>
5. Now lay the second tag, just as you did the first, and cover with the next inbetween strip. Sew along the bottom edge.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjemfd33W2Mi-IYIS2SowLfDtZ1oLEzVt0UDbwSXC031uBiX0JqjhxWL_-Ezsba2SV8lfgyW-9enNufi8CbG6_dolAytODoKCkpz7vDVG3AD-p1fNFz6oqs3fYFWbJL15Ra1COvQ2qMdJo/s1600/photo+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="564" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjemfd33W2Mi-IYIS2SowLfDtZ1oLEzVt0UDbwSXC031uBiX0JqjhxWL_-Ezsba2SV8lfgyW-9enNufi8CbG6_dolAytODoKCkpz7vDVG3AD-p1fNFz6oqs3fYFWbJL15Ra1COvQ2qMdJo/s640/photo+6.JPG" width="640"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6, Repeat this until all 5 tags have been stitched in place, and the last piece is the last 2x5 strip. When you flip it over, it should look something like this underneath. I didn't press it with an iron, mostly because I didn't have it near, but I think finger pressing keeps some 'spring' in the fabric, which is good because you want the tags to stand up when the cushion is complete. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Place the top and bottom pieces, right sides together and sew around 3 and a half sides, leaving a largish space for turning. Turn inside out. Fill with something heavy, not too full, whipstitch the opening closed and you're done!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX0Qf51Fy44FMh4duH16uDY05anKKF5QWUMjB6owWqbuA7aDIvvCewPG1VjRXK0_QNBENlEGNtKCkxUf27UD7BSi6DwABw9zP8rCXw13KBLpF20V1qlljv-ASTKG003Pp0Tr2vcV1Qpqs/s1600/photo+10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="604" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX0Qf51Fy44FMh4duH16uDY05anKKF5QWUMjB6owWqbuA7aDIvvCewPG1VjRXK0_QNBENlEGNtKCkxUf27UD7BSi6DwABw9zP8rCXw13KBLpF20V1qlljv-ASTKG003Pp0Tr2vcV1Qpqs/s640/photo+10.JPG" width="640"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<div>
And I thought, "hmmm, that would be a great quilt"! And so I've made that great quilt!<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidY4D1kgRLhRHzrFhh-8oPLS1c8RInOAbkHqQcXLqEgiH-xeXaUQZ8_qgGc0RP47H2hyMEjWkkelFdq8KzXChL3_MZ7netTmzzlW-2a1tkXUhL5iYwBXjOAlN0RQ8hbeiHI132OQ5qs4g/s640/blogger-image-1071209994.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidY4D1kgRLhRHzrFhh-8oPLS1c8RInOAbkHqQcXLqEgiH-xeXaUQZ8_qgGc0RP47H2hyMEjWkkelFdq8KzXChL3_MZ7netTmzzlW-2a1tkXUhL5iYwBXjOAlN0RQ8hbeiHI132OQ5qs4g/s640/blogger-image-1071209994.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
The cat thinks it's great too! The backing was a tad short thanks to a red pirate bandana I rashly chopped off my red fabric... But of course a pieced backing is always more exciting, and being a lazy bones, I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't have to!</div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCDq6AZZKnaGmp19g7anVlORVTlMzsgygm6fNpyqhCO6cCRvX_5nEx6vh812m4-nfGYYx8O-9rGm6mn5yIrxmosfkgWMMdPrYD-UUrL_jTb7zu1DmFYIB4iic6QTKuQ17pNPTTPkUSo50/s640/blogger-image-1812064388.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCDq6AZZKnaGmp19g7anVlORVTlMzsgygm6fNpyqhCO6cCRvX_5nEx6vh812m4-nfGYYx8O-9rGm6mn5yIrxmosfkgWMMdPrYD-UUrL_jTb7zu1DmFYIB4iic6QTKuQ17pNPTTPkUSo50/s640/blogger-image-1812064388.jpg" /></a></div>

You can see the quilting here, rainbow variegated Gutterman Sulky 30 cotton- and a wavy stitch - thanks Amanda Jean for the inspiration! </div>

It was fun and quick. I love it, hope Tom does too!! </div>

I was stitching up a load of HSTs the other night, and it went fast. Recently I visited a lovely quilt shop in Suffolk called Quilters Haven. Of course when faced with such an amazing choice of fabric I couldn't make a decision very easily at all! So I ended up with something that isn't very me, but I like it none the less!<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Some Flurry in grey, always useful. And then a bundle of Downton Abbey prints which are low-ish volume, vintagey and would go well with my living room if ever I made a cushion or something like that with them. My son got excited by the thread display , and convinced me I needed some variegated thread. Funny boy!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We were staying with my mum, and when we got back from the quilt shop I came down with fever and chills. So I packed the car, loaded up the boy and managed to make it home down the motorway just in time. I got through the front door, handed the boy to my hubby and took myself to bed for two whole days. I was so ill it took over a week for me to even open the bag and look at my purchases...I know, really sick right?! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All better now though, and linking up to lovely Molli Sparkles! </div>

<br>
I made a scrappy trip quilt top. I had these Denyse Schmidt Ansonia fat quarters that I just didn't know what to do with.<br>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvDSaMpucYjLrmMmPvQ7g9Ts98MxyURHDpTQHC3SaGjeMuGC4i3HDTQ3Mz5KlZJYd-KUQJrRHELr5IVMsZ8Yej_4KodVAvwQuOENDbt7j0b0WO1gbphalYXAPU2bxcQr7tAvyE8qUtKQ0/s640/blogger-image-869055259.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvDSaMpucYjLrmMmPvQ7g9Ts98MxyURHDpTQHC3SaGjeMuGC4i3HDTQ3Mz5KlZJYd-KUQJrRHELr5IVMsZ8Yej_4KodVAvwQuOENDbt7j0b0WO1gbphalYXAPU2bxcQr7tAvyE8qUtKQ0/s640/blogger-image-869055259.jpg"></a></div>
<br>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz7SBw7zvXLCJpvUkjMbF6Uhz_i-8CElnit111MtzHGjCDui5up0-uaU7gddW3CLyjxPHHOYR4VyWF-uZPBvJj69VvR86tULivNoHfJS7WsFCRqUOZ-5NgumJO6XIWznmnyzfGG_6UQj4/s640/blogger-image--2020751157.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz7SBw7zvXLCJpvUkjMbF6Uhz_i-8CElnit111MtzHGjCDui5up0-uaU7gddW3CLyjxPHHOYR4VyWF-uZPBvJj69VvR86tULivNoHfJS7WsFCRqUOZ-5NgumJO6XIWznmnyzfGG_6UQj4/s640/blogger-image--2020751157.jpg"></a></div>
<br></div>
<div>
Quite odd prints, high contrast stripes, the weird pink and black swirls...should I go with large chunks or small scraps? My quilty sister advised small scraps, You need to make a scrappy trip she said, you'll love it.<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
So I did. And I did. Love it, that is. The process was fun and easy. And those odd prints take on a whole new life when chopped up.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

Terrible late night photo! This is laying out blocks to decide placement.<br>
<br></div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It's not quite big enough, so a 2.5" white sashing and then 2.5" scrappy border will pad it out enough I hope. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I also have this quilt in the pipeline, a family co-production, we're going to make a couple hundred of these:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>

I finished not one but two quilts, one of them start to finish. <div>First I finished the binding on my scandi stars quilt - navy blue. Not black or white as recommended by Mary Fons, but a dark neutral none the less. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQbixdWDPSpsqrTuYv-k6izeZghuW-bJrzuvim2Wxnwvg1LutWJub1akjjikPlwYdgG5wK1nhcwvmQ1RzH8LYIApC5ManwFmv7VlH7hVQm79CPyoGRbm-Kk_9x-2QXiRqsyGEWn8DOfbI/s640/blogger-image-701729294.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQbixdWDPSpsqrTuYv-k6izeZghuW-bJrzuvim2Wxnwvg1LutWJub1akjjikPlwYdgG5wK1nhcwvmQ1RzH8LYIApC5ManwFmv7VlH7hVQm79CPyoGRbm-Kk_9x-2QXiRqsyGEWn8DOfbI/s640/blogger-image-701729294.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I included double batting and a flannel backing, so it is seriously cosy. Also my first quilt with no white- I love it! </div><div><br></div><div>Second quilt was conceived of and finished in 6 days. I learned that a friend at church was in the middle of a course of chemo last weds, and thought what can I do? Make a chemo quilt of course. So I pulled fabric and had it pre washed by Friday, cut Saturday, top sewn by Monday, quilted, bound, washed, dried and delivered on Tuesday, ready for her next treatment on Wednesday. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVup6prYIk18Fqi8ghuuVp10hpjXSclkS-zN_jYuQl-KwPrHaESN7A0I8ccRpn3nPYXZ9WaV9LOS8A2Fbv8bE297hDKjWvGPAUE2K9_2iOKiSIBu5jKpq9IuXnQzGv3uIPcHHtGwrhCXA/s640/blogger-image--1178151805.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVup6prYIk18Fqi8ghuuVp10hpjXSclkS-zN_jYuQl-KwPrHaESN7A0I8ccRpn3nPYXZ9WaV9LOS8A2Fbv8bE297hDKjWvGPAUE2K9_2iOKiSIBu5jKpq9IuXnQzGv3uIPcHHtGwrhCXA/s640/blogger-image--1178151805.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ3TEVetYU5kRj3DQCsbZRjxksnqtdB3gOZliV128fl-rIFVhI0rncTT9t0PHqgAdXsU4XLTI3SUnHBYc_H6ctemI_oYecL4mwWQJcsL8u53gbpsqGJKFfHRogbuK3P0Pr-2m1FNmdAVw/s640/blogger-image--438576174.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ3TEVetYU5kRj3DQCsbZRjxksnqtdB3gOZliV128fl-rIFVhI0rncTT9t0PHqgAdXsU4XLTI3SUnHBYc_H6ctemI_oYecL4mwWQJcsL8u53gbpsqGJKFfHRogbuK3P0Pr-2m1FNmdAVw/s640/blogger-image--438576174.jpg"></a></div> I didn't use batting but quilted it onto a fleece blanket (ikea £3!) so it's small and light enough to fit into a regular bag, but still soft and warm. Not only is the latest block in my sampler quilt orange, but I cut and stitched it while watching 'Orange is the New Black' . But then I got so into OITNB that I had to just watch it and not sew or cut at the same time.<br />

It's an Amish star block, not sure that I love it, but I think it will work in the quilt. And now I'm going to link to lovely Kelly at needle and thread Thursday <a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.co.uk/">http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.co.uk</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am on a bit of an orange trip. I went on an amazing quilt course taught by <a href="http://yarnstorm.blogs.com/">Jane Brocket</a> on being brave with colour. We had to choose a fabric in a colour we really didn't like, from a pile of her own stash fabrics, then work from there to put colours and patterns together. I chose a brown and tan fabric... And look what I ended up with:</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilLizWQ2Jfh3Au29APsl4IZt8hAysJoRLCTWZUu60ceklqmgWk9R6rYIpno9Z2YMvtnBralo_4E4LXzVhAFmK-FPcDakoAKYUzqpokcnCnelE_f-4d83zkh6bRfdMgBtt5SzKwsttxvfo/s640/blogger-image-557832244.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilLizWQ2Jfh3Au29APsl4IZt8hAysJoRLCTWZUu60ceklqmgWk9R6rYIpno9Z2YMvtnBralo_4E4LXzVhAFmK-FPcDakoAKYUzqpokcnCnelE_f-4d83zkh6bRfdMgBtt5SzKwsttxvfo/s640/blogger-image-557832244.jpg" /></a></div>
It ended up with blue and orange - and I really like it! It's going to be a cushion for my mum. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally I made a doll quilt for my friend's daughter's birthday. I feel like a real quilting mama now, sending my son to parties with home made gifts. </div>

You can't quilt a power ranger or a ninja turtle, so I have to make the most of little girl parties! </div>

We did some hand sewing, made friendship bracelets, loom bands - they showed me how to do that- and finally I brought in my hand crank sewing machine and they all had a little turn. They just got to pick 2 fabrics, cut patches and piece them together. Then I took them home, and put them all together. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibu2ejhtCNm_hSUOVq_Pr-xvxMyImkb2niXf3VrzDgzEuSMcKHz1UoK5luqy6JDxed3Kz0K_bJjuD-KbtuOpnZwExTElEVFwoDzoxIRXdhsXoXraBc6YU3Aye_Zecdh5IcUv3fgjDTEzE/s640/blogger-image--2120156249.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibu2ejhtCNm_hSUOVq_Pr-xvxMyImkb2niXf3VrzDgzEuSMcKHz1UoK5luqy6JDxed3Kz0K_bJjuD-KbtuOpnZwExTElEVFwoDzoxIRXdhsXoXraBc6YU3Aye_Zecdh5IcUv3fgjDTEzE/s640/blogger-image--2120156249.jpg"></a></div>I quilted it with orange thread, mettler silk finish cotton, and it looks like the stitching on jeans- really cool. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I backed it with scraps, stuffed it really well and stitched it shut. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6osPc-gKRxyOkjykpwH1j1lmFFsIK8M2osw7WF7JwxNaVCMhyphenhyphenlTH67cxIQOa9FbbWbTiru2JAbgp22p8QNs7PGqgj4Un7go6LIkKKARm_UdFlxEA-zIfWkbzaLS6061_KFMuLVIKOaBY/s640/blogger-image--1753502901.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6osPc-gKRxyOkjykpwH1j1lmFFsIK8M2osw7WF7JwxNaVCMhyphenhyphenlTH67cxIQOa9FbbWbTiru2JAbgp22p8QNs7PGqgj4Un7go6LIkKKARm_UdFlxEA-zIfWkbzaLS6061_KFMuLVIKOaBY/s640/blogger-image--1753502901.jpg"></a></div>I gave it to the girls today- they loved it! I <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">do actually also have a quilt finish to share. A wee rainbow baby quilt that I put together in evenings after work. It was going to be a regular coins quilt with each stack the same width , but I didn't measure carefully and cut the first stack too narrow. So I looked at the rest of my slab of strips and adjusted my widths to get the graduated effect. I like this much better - a happy accident ! </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

I love these little shows, lots of great tips and ideas. Anyway, it's my first star quilt, a wall hanging, and so far just the top finished, but super satisfying none the less. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTiroy1KJ4RPQZp1ZLunxjUi8MMBnuWcBqY2edao-MU73iP1EeuJh60mmJC1W7ys5dZPsuiYgFiY-aRd3DHt6f4kTp2bI8ZUqZI8r5BWXCO0dLvI6JqOMmUbpaLvADa8w_fmoh-s1AucA/s640/blogger-image-2080443437.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTiroy1KJ4RPQZp1ZLunxjUi8MMBnuWcBqY2edao-MU73iP1EeuJh60mmJC1W7ys5dZPsuiYgFiY-aRd3DHt6f4kTp2bI8ZUqZI8r5BWXCO0dLvI6JqOMmUbpaLvADa8w_fmoh-s1AucA/s640/blogger-image-2080443437.jpg"></a></div><div>The yellows are from my AMH true colors fabric win from the Village Habedashery. Here it is:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFEc_Wn7hQmDZbJZw3BGyu56LSchpRiacyG0_DuMLEwMr1Dna3J9E6wTWoYGiVp_jB1-EctJHOE_G1oBemIpQpSXTf9EP8UvT2Ris2u4FxoHHzlvpKiqgLZQfCY8Hi1FZ0Mj78bNi27cU/s1600/photo+(15).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFEc_Wn7hQmDZbJZw3BGyu56LSchpRiacyG0_DuMLEwMr1Dna3J9E6wTWoYGiVp_jB1-EctJHOE_G1oBemIpQpSXTf9EP8UvT2Ris2u4FxoHHzlvpKiqgLZQfCY8Hi1FZ0Mj78bNi27cU/s1600/photo+(15).JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is a simple patchwork, because I've never made one before, and I think I should do it at least once! Also it was fairly quick, which, in the time I squeeze my sewing into, is important. It's a 12th birthday present for my niece. The fabrics are cute, the colours girly, but the blueberry and cranberry colours give it sufficient 'darkness' to last her through her teens I hope.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWTkbNSN_SuKm7aQm4GrhTWRbP8FhkM31eYtWQy-wfHrK1H7uE9tjAoMubOivqEAo1J6k6N7twFModEeNCd69eJGuw7GVyLtT6Bz-WjN9F2-tuyd_1a9f9QEVIKAx5w8vf1diwJllqysg/s1600/photo+(16).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWTkbNSN_SuKm7aQm4GrhTWRbP8FhkM31eYtWQy-wfHrK1H7uE9tjAoMubOivqEAo1J6k6N7twFModEeNCd69eJGuw7GVyLtT6Bz-WjN9F2-tuyd_1a9f9QEVIKAx5w8vf1diwJllqysg/s1600/photo+(16).JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
The feature fabrics are Enchanted Forest, and I've added some Amy Butler, Denyse Schmitt, random polka dots, all sorts. So I've called it Blueberry Forest and made a proper label - sorry no pic.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdqd4C3h3NBrf3TaZ8d7qqezpVQOLn1eI9Y0a5Hwza5Km4BGAZ8hniLTqjwPzjzqoqONRq1rCjLAKvHG22O804eO06FgCJtbRxcFLsQBNbvq_jGl7SEIqpUAYvBfCFgyWJqGH0arC8Vq8/s1600/photo+(18).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdqd4C3h3NBrf3TaZ8d7qqezpVQOLn1eI9Y0a5Hwza5Km4BGAZ8hniLTqjwPzjzqoqONRq1rCjLAKvHG22O804eO06FgCJtbRxcFLsQBNbvq_jGl7SEIqpUAYvBfCFgyWJqGH0arC8Vq8/s1600/photo+(18).JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
I've got half way through the quilting - and ran out with hubby to snap it while the sun shone. In other news I was so chuffed to win this great giveaway from the lovely folks at <a href="https://www.thevillagehaberdashery.co.uk/">The Village Habedashery</a>.<br />
It's a fat quarter bundle of True Colours in Green. And they sent a lovely card! (my name is Esther, I blog under my nickname!)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't wait to make something. The only thing is they are crying out for a few blues, pinks and purples...I think I'd better shop (it was payday yesterday after all).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also want to say how much I enjoy seeing all the things my fellow (much more prolific) bloggers make and write about. When life is crazy and work is stressful, which it is, it's so uplifting to see so much creativity. So thank you!</div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">I found her the Saturday before Christmas, in a local charity shop. I'd gone in to buy more Christmas cards and saw a sewing machine standing in the window, a Bernina, for £50. I had to have it. I didn't know if it worked, but at that price who cared, so I snapped her up as my Christmas present. I got her home, threaded her up, plugged in, switched on, and...nothing! Not a flicker of life. So disappointing, I would have to wait til after Christmas to get to the repair shop, but that night I pondered that the first thing the repair guy would do would be to check the plug. So first thing the next day, there I was in my pyjamas, with a screwdriver checking the plug, and sure enough a wire had come loose- so I rewired and tightened it all. I plugged in the machine, held my breath and switched on- bingo! Lights, needle, action, we were in business.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br />I found a manual online, and did a quick search on the model, 1230, and discovered that I have an iconic machine, and that she sews all kinds of cool stuff. The Baby Girl in question is only a teensy bit overdue, but in any case, when she does finally arrive (she will be my new niece), she will have this lovely quilt ready and waiting to kick about on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgg_BV5bQS_a9MF26OxDeyzK6vR9sQZBB1B9PQxqaG2vxbNZN-iRB_OTyoibQiSpta1gBox00cCFlrwTk2kH-peLxD_z2QyG05-zClF0RD3GZkk-pq0ZMIHZg2YRZjD5OKhmf-WuK-UOY/s1600/IMG_1433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgg_BV5bQS_a9MF26OxDeyzK6vR9sQZBB1B9PQxqaG2vxbNZN-iRB_OTyoibQiSpta1gBox00cCFlrwTk2kH-peLxD_z2QyG05-zClF0RD3GZkk-pq0ZMIHZg2YRZjD5OKhmf-WuK-UOY/s320/IMG_1433.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
I had a lot of fun making this quilt, and was amazed at how it came together - I just followed Kelly's very clear <a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/purse-strings-block.html">Purse Strings</a> directions and voila! A quilt emerged! I had fun collecting fabrics. The Giraffe print was the one that got me decided on the colour scheme, then of course some pink.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The fact that there are leaves on the trees and sunshine in the garden tell you just how long it has taken me to get these pics up - although I didn't want to spoil the surprise by posting until after the quilt had been safely delivered to my little sis.<br />
<br />

<br />
I like the back too - it's cheerful don't you think?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And the obligatory rolled quilt shot, modelled by my 80 year old Singer Rocket. Which I have recently had cleaned and fixed - I will get to use it over Christmas!<br />

So come on Baby Girl, we can't wait to meet you - and I hope you like the quilt your Auntie made you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4360861986756769185.post-85360178387603849902013-11-07T14:44:00.000-08:002013-11-07T14:50:09.508-08:00Purse Strings BlocksLast week I had a whole sewing day all to myself. These are rare, and come along only in school holidays! I made a good start on a new project, following the purse strings block tutorial, an original block put together by Kelly from My Quilt infatuation. The tutorial was really clear and easy to follow, which was great as this is my first journey into the world of 45 degree angles!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjARUTtNBMejZMErJfI-u7LHJC496i5eKsh_GfCHcGzAxc6c1P2qccMVtU7M88WasvBETE-cdWXXvQkGwoAKvW_bi-MdAdoAhCP9AQMxp3KVKx7aQxMPqqxaanYA1ITH7iuQMtAzSBnELk/s1600/photo+(8).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjARUTtNBMejZMErJfI-u7LHJC496i5eKsh_GfCHcGzAxc6c1P2qccMVtU7M88WasvBETE-cdWXXvQkGwoAKvW_bi-MdAdoAhCP9AQMxp3KVKx7aQxMPqqxaanYA1ITH7iuQMtAzSBnELk/s320/photo+(8).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I also used the paper plate technique for sorting the pieces for each block - so simple and so effective. I got a real production line going on, but didn't muddle up my pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJjfup3phpyvFB1Q9dwKfZYywRvnFScepR8clNh3v8Oyi2zL4cLV0sYhyphenhyphenQxxwjPQJxezZQRQvcn4V14Qx9hFlgXa1E9-gRmX0VN6p_y43U9Dd0AJ0G9s4oHY76AUtrSByC2vXX790j0K8/s1600/photo+(9).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJjfup3phpyvFB1Q9dwKfZYywRvnFScepR8clNh3v8Oyi2zL4cLV0sYhyphenhyphenQxxwjPQJxezZQRQvcn4V14Qx9hFlgXa1E9-gRmX0VN6p_y43U9Dd0AJ0G9s4oHY76AUtrSByC2vXX790j0K8/s320/photo+(9).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I even managed to get my white triangles overlapping in the same direction - I have really impressed myself!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrIHLHURulQ3mU1o_w1ZTGZYaTSViuhwBGm4WQ82i8FY4YO4WaKpemQiiuEQ8yRPdilxidyvHsNq-SFgfbzMCR-iiJDyZPXrqKVqPRqWiShGNSKg2XRbLJwgtlivKi6NKZwGvo1tYtJJE/s1600/photo+(10).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrIHLHURulQ3mU1o_w1ZTGZYaTSViuhwBGm4WQ82i8FY4YO4WaKpemQiiuEQ8yRPdilxidyvHsNq-SFgfbzMCR-iiJDyZPXrqKVqPRqWiShGNSKg2XRbLJwgtlivKi6NKZwGvo1tYtJJE/s320/photo+(10).JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
And I have generated a lovely stack of ready to stitch HSTs to play with as I trimmed the corners off the squares.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlxCgfz34P5yKuXV1AHYwENOGhyphenhyphen1UzxU9quRmhEVJRQQPJi3pIH6p4RkQHaBwIk2nIcOuO-naYdkjpaOUObCgAj2n7VKm8oFk46siM3VhRpn6jWZTLLjHIcvhHrALpfBi8TWOstv6RUVo/s1600/photo+(7).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlxCgfz34P5yKuXV1AHYwENOGhyphenhyphen1UzxU9quRmhEVJRQQPJi3pIH6p4RkQHaBwIk2nIcOuO-naYdkjpaOUObCgAj2n7VKm8oFk46siM3VhRpn6jWZTLLjHIcvhHrALpfBi8TWOstv6RUVo/s320/photo+(7).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I have lots more to do - but I'm so pleased with the start I have made. <br />
<br />
I'm linking up to My Quilt infatuation now... with thanks for the great tutorial!<br />
